A Message from Miss Susan:
"At Discovery Preschool, I enjoy building new relationships with families each year.  As a teacher, I support the children in developing positive self-esteem, cooperation skills, independence, and the ability to problem solve.  There is a strong sense of community within our parent co-operative frame work, and our play based program is the ideal setting for preschoolers to learn and grow.  I love being a part of the Discovery family!"

As part of a parent cooperative, you and your family become partners in your child's educational experience. Parents and teachers work together to nurture and affirm the individual strengths of each child. Parents gain first-hand knowledge of the school routine and become familiar with your child's peers by volunteering in the classroom. Additionally, as part of a parent cooperative, you have a voice in the decisions made concerning the school. Of course there are certain expectations that come with being a partner in your child's education. These time requirements are outlined below.
  • Assist in classroom at least 6x per year
  • One general clean-up day per year (2-4 hours)
  • One hallway cleaning per year
  • Participate on Board or committee (see table at right)
  • Be an active participant in the cooperative spirit of the school

"I came to Discovery Preschool as a parent and stayed because I strongly believe in the program. The parent cooperative model enriches the learning environment. The investment of time is repaid tenfold! Working with young children is a unique experience - I learn something new everyday. Each child's journey of self-discovery stretches my teaching practice. I feel lucky to be a part of this wondrous experience."
Our highly qualified head teacher brings a wealth of experience in Early Childhood Education to the classroom. She holds a degree in Early Childhood Education and a Vermont educator's license with endorsements in Early Childhood Education and Early Childhood Special Education. Our assistant teacher holds a Bachelor's degrees in a field outside of education and has earned her CDA credentials as of spring 2013. All teachers participate in continuing education yearly. In order to uphold the highest standards of quality and care, all teachers are members of NAEYC. Our head teacher (Miss Dawn) has been with the school since 1998. Our assistant teachers has been with the school since 2010 (Miss Susan).

Discovery Preschool is accredited by the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC). NAEYC administers the nation's largest and most widely recognized voluntary accreditation system for high-quality childhood programs. It's purpose is to improve quality of care and education provided for young children and to recognize early childhood programs that function in accordance with the criteria for high-quality early childhood programs. Discovery Preschool has also earned 5 STARS - the highest designation - through the Vermont Step Ahead Recognition System.

Partnerships have been formed and are maintained with five school districts in Chittenden county.
